Welcome to Wordsmith Studio’s Weekly Prompt!
Every Thursday we’ll post a new topic for your creative pleasure. When you get a good flash story, memory, poem, or photo (or three, or five) post them to your blog, website, Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter. Then come back here and post a link to your contribution(s) in the comments.
This Week’s Theme is: Rivals
This weekend is rivalry weekend! A lot of college football teams square off against their arch rivals. What is it that makes rivalry so important? How do we relate to people who are fans of our rival team? What significance does rivalry play in sports, in work, in life? We know competition can bring out the best (and worst) in us. After a month of challenges and competitions, how are you feeling about your rivals? Did you crush them? Or cheer them on? Why must we have a winner and a loser?
In fiction, rivals are the antagonists. They are the forces acting against the protagonist, keeping the main character from getting what he or she most desperately wants. Rivals can challenge us to be better than we thought we could be. How can your character benefit from the introduction of a rival?
Write about rivalry. The good, the bad, the ugly. The victory celebration, the heartbreak of defeat. Those overtime battles where you just know some miracle is waiting to bestow the ever-coveted W on your team. The losing streaks where the taunting and malice burn your skin before the game has even begun. Write about the rivals you love to hate and the ones you hate to love. Then come back here and ring that victory bell (leave a comment with your link).
