Creative Prompt: What You’ll Miss

Welcome to Wordsmith Studio’s Weekly Prompt!

Every Thursday we’ll post a new topic for your creative pleasure.  When you get a good flash story, memory, poem, or photo (or three, or five) post them to your blog, website, Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter. Then come back here and post a link to your contribution(s) in the comments.

This Week’s Theme is: What You’ll Miss

Parents always say that as much as they hate getting up three times a night, someday they’ll miss the quiet hours alone with a new baby. Or as much as the piles of laundry seem endless, someday they’ll miss the mess their little ones could leave behind. Once someone has passed away, we sometimes miss the sound of her voice, or the way he would snore in his chair while “resting his eyes.”

We know all things pass. All good things must come to an end. And yet, it’s so hard to know, in the moment, that the symphony of our lives is playing on and that eventually some of the notes will be gone forever. It’s hard to remember to cherish them while they’re here.

Write about what you’ll miss. What’s the thing right now that feels like too heavy a burden, too worrisome a process, too annoying a routine? What’s the thing you dread, the thing you complain about, the thing you are pretty sure you can’t wait till it’s over? That may very well be the thing you’ll miss when it’s gone.

Get Creative!

Leave your blog link or your flash fiction or your poem in the comments. Share your regret before it ever happens. The act of doing so may prompt you to stop taking someone or something for granted.

Funny, this morning I was silently complaining about the toothpaste splatters on my bathroom mirror, but then I stopped and decided I would miss them one day after my kids move out. Then I read this prompt! Perfect! 🙂
